Dog rushed to vets after eating meat containing fish hook on footpath

Pet owners are being urged to be vigilant after a dog needed vet treatment after eating meat containing a fish hook left on a footpath near Bristol.

The dog needed emergency treatment to remove the fishing hook from its throat after eating a piece of meat that had been left out on a footpath near Avon Road in Pill.

The dog was successfully treated and is now back at home.

Police have launched an investigation into the incident and are urging pet owners to be vigilant - and report any similar incidents to the force.

A spokesman for Avon and Somerset Police said: "We received a report on Friday, April 16, from a member of the public that a dog had required emergency vet treatment to remove a fishing hook from its throat, after eating a piece of meat that had been left out on a footpath near Avon Road, Pill.

"The dog was successfully treated and is now safe and well.

"While it is unclear if this was a deliberate attempt to cause harm, the neighbourhood team are investigating and pet owners are advised to remain vigilant and report any similar incidents to police."

Anyone with information that could help police with their enquiries is asked to call 101 quoting log 0166 of April 16.
