Dog run over and killed after being spooked by fireworks and bolting into road

A family is heartbroken after their pet dog was run over and killed when she was spooked by fireworks and bolted into the road.

Cadi, a five-year-old cocker/springer spaniel cross, was in the garden relieving herself when she was stunned by a series of loud bangs and explosions.

Garry and Ceri Hamilton say their beloved pooch then fled, smashing through their wooden fence near Roath Park, Cardiff, Wales Online reports.

She was later seen frightened and running around the local recreation ground.

That night Garry received a devastating phone call and was told their "fantastic, affectionate" friend had died after being run down.

Garry, 58, told Wales Online: "It was all quiet when we let her out, but it suddenly got very noisy very quickly.

"She must have freaked out and escaped somehow, but before I could go and look for her I got word that she'd been hit by a car and killed.

"Someone must have taken her to the local vet who, having found our details on Cadi's microchip, called us with the awful news."

The whole family are heartbroken after the devastating loss of their beloved pooch.

Daughter Caitlin called Cadi her dad's "reason to get up early each morning".

"We're distraught, she was such a fantastic dog, very affectionate. I loved our walks together," Garry said.

"I just want to warn other pet owners that, even though Bonfire Night is over, to keep a close eye on their animals.

"People will still be setting off fireworks in the run up to Christmas and we don't want what happened to Cadi happening to anyone else's dog."

Bonfire Night celebrations are notoriously difficult for anxious dogs, who get scared easily by the loud bangs and whooping whistles.

Each years dog owners find new inventive ways of keeping their canines calm when the fireworks start going off.

This years Caitlin Miller, 17, took to Facebook to offer a nifty solution involving old socks.

The student shared that people need not buy stress bands or calming jackets, which can cost up to £40 each to soothe their pets.

Instead, she revealed how cutting off the end of each sock and placing them around the dogs’ heads can recreate the comforting weight of being cuddled.

The student from South Shields, Tyne and Wear, who owns two dogs, five-month-old Jack Russell named Cookie and nine-year-old Pomchi Ruby, said that the hack worked right way on her dogs.
