Dog reunited with owner who abandoned him on This Morning - but viewers are seething

This Morning viewers were left outraged after a segment showed a woman who abandoned her dog being reunited with her furry friend.

Alison Skelly, the owner of Rooney the dog, tied her pet to a church in Blackpool on December 18 and left him to find a new home.

A heartbreaking note was left with Rooney, saying: "Please believe me when I say I haven't done this easily. My heart is broken and I will truly miss him more than words can say. I hope he can find the new home he deserves. I love you and I'm so so sorry."

The poor dog was due to be re-homed after being picked up by the RSPCA, but the charity Street Paws helped to track down his owner.

Lucy Bellwood, co-ordinator at Street Paws, said: "She was struggling with life, finances, mental health, all sorts really. There's never just one thing, I think there was a whole series of issues and she didn't want to drag Rooney down with her."

Alison told This Morning: "I've never cried so much in my life, even when I lost family members. I've never cried so much and felt so much heartbreak when I left him."

Viewers then saw the moment Alison was reunited with her beloved pup, with Alison saying: "I've got my baby back!"

But This Morning fans were left outraged by the emotional reunion, with some taking to Twitter to vent their anger.

One said: "Absolute madness how they can celebrate a woman reuniting with her dog after she’s abandoned the dog at a lamppost, she didn’t even have the decency to go to a shelter."

Another wrote: "Erm why is #thismorning giving back a dog to the woman who abandoned him?"

A third said: "Sorry but she doesn't deserve to have the dog back, she literally tied him up and left him.. She could have took him to a rescue centre or friends."

"Shouldn't be allowed to own a dog after tying it to a post to abandon! If you cant handle having a pet. Go to the animal rescue centre, not leave the animal in the cold" raged another viewer.

"No sympathy for this woman- why tie a dog to a post instead of bringing him to a rescue centre? She shouldn't be allowed to have him back" wrote another.

But some were left in tears by the heartwarming segment, with one saying: "Weeping buckets at Rooney."

Another said: "How amazing are Street Paws."

"The story of Rooney the pup has me in tears of joy" wrote a third.

"He's absolutely gorgeous, his reaction when he saw his owner made me cry" said another.
