Dog rescued after falling over cliff edge in Northumberland and becoming stranded

A dog became trapped on a cliff after falling over the edge during a walk with his owner.

The black and white Collie dog went over the cliffs between Seaton Sluice and Hartley in Northumberland at around 4.15pm on Sunday.

The Tynemouth Volunteer Life Brigade, the Blyth RNLI crew and the Blyth Coastguard Rescue Team were called to the scene in an attempt to rescue the stranded canine.

A lifeboat was launched by the RNLI with three volunteer crew members on board and they arrived on scene at 4.35pm.

Carrying out a shoreline search of the area, the team in the lifeboat found the dog but as he was trapped on the cliffs he couldn't be reached from the water.

A member of the Blyth Coastguard team was lowered down the cliff using rescue equipment and managed to secure the dog in an animal rescue bag. Both the rescuer and the dog were then pulled back up the cliff.

Other than a light wound, the dog appeared unharmed from his fall but his owner took him to the vets for a check up.

The crews stood down from the rescue just after 5.30pm.

The Blyth Coastguard Rescue Team have reminded owners to keep dogs on a lead when walking along the cliff paths and to call 999 for the Coastguard in an emergency.
