A dog has died after jumping out of an open car window on the M5, according to social media reports.
A post on Somerset Live's M5 Traffic and Travel Facebook group warns drivers about the dangers of their pet escaping.
It reads: "A reminder to pet owners. Secure your dog in the car.
"Poor little Jack Russell gone over the Rainbow Bridge after jumping out of the open window on the M5 near Bristol.
"Poor little thing must have been terrified."
Other group members have commented, one of whom said her husband saw the tragic incident unfold.
Mel Old said: "My husband very sadly witnessed this today he slowed down but others didn't see or realise.
"Very very sad poor thing was terrified trying to dodge the traffic. Volume of traffic he stood no chance ...."
Lisa Williams said: "I hate seeing dogs hanging out of car windows. By law they are supposed to be secure in the car, by harness, seatbelt, travel cage, anything is better than losing them like this."
Donna Small said: "The stupidity of some people amaze me, now a poor little pup has lost its life in a tragic way, owners should never be allowed to own another animal ."
