Dog owners warned about letting their pets eat grass

It's common for dog owners to worry about their pet eating grass.

Some owners may be concerned their dog's habit is a sign of illness or malnutrition. However, this is a myth.

It's likely dogs eat grass simply for the taste, especially when it's fresh in the summer. That said, owners should be aware of one danger.

During the spring and summer months, grass seeds, which are attached to the tops of long grass stems can easily attach onto your dog. These seeds often get stuck in eyes, ears, skin and paws, which can cause problems.

According to The Kennel Club, some grass seeds resemble tiny arrowheads which burrow into the skin and cause your dog a lot of pain and discomfort. Therefore, it's important to always check your dog for grass seeds after walks, especially if you've been in meadows or woodlands.

Grass seeds tend to cause more problems for breeds with feathery toes, like springer spaniels. Common signs of grass seeds affecting your dog include:

  • shaking its head
  • licking its paws
  • looking uncomfortable
  • being lethargic
  • seeming like it's in pain

If your dog is showing any of these signs, contact your vet immediately.
