Dog owner's warning for giant hogweed in Leeds after pup left with nasty burn

A dog was left with weeping wounds on his nose and near his eye after a run in with giant hogweed in Leeds.

Mungo, a one-year-old Bedlington Terrier cross, suffered 'dripping, weeping' wounds on his nose after his encounter with the toxic plant while out on a walk on the canal path near their home in Methley.

Owner Elizabeth Berry initially thought the pup had a bee sting on his nose but was shocked when they woke up the next morning to find the burns.

She said: "We woke up the next morning and his nose looked burnt and his eye looked burnt and he just had these dripping wounds.

"It looked like his nose started to eat away, the skin started to disappear.

"It was justing dripping, weeping, it looked like a blister that just kept going."

The mother-of-three took Mungo to the vets and where he was given a course of antibiotics - but staff said they'd not seen hogweed burns on a dog before and had to do some research.

The plant's sap contains toxic chemicals which can cause nasty blistering within 48 hours.

Now Elizabeth is warning people to watch out for giant hogweed so their pets - or children - don't suffer the same nasty injuries.

She believes the plant was on a stretch of the Leeds Liverpool Canal near Lemonroyd Marina, in Methley.

She said: "Being a dog, he's here there and everywhere, he's only one so he goes off into the bushes.

"We've seen the council out in suits with flames getting rid of it in the past."

A spokeswoman for the Canal and River Trust  said the Trust was aware of giant hogweed present at Lemonroyd Lock (Lock 7.)

She said there had also been sightings along the riverbank below the lock - but this is on land the Trust doesn't own, and nor does it own the Marina.

British Waterways Marinas Limited, who own Lemonroyd Marina, have been approached for comment.
