Dog owner's horror after pet almost dies from 'water intoxication' after swimming in Scots loch

A Scots tot was left 'traumatised' after his beloved dog almost died in front of him at Loch Doon.

Lauchlin Owens, 2, was enjoying a day out at the Ayrshire beauty spot with his parents and the family's Springer Spaniel Clyde.

The three year old pooch started to violently jerk and had a seizure after suffering water Intoxication.

Mum Joanne Owens, 31, and dad Lewis Owens, 28, from Kilmarnock sprang into action desperately trying to save the pet as Lauchlin watched in horror.

Joanne said: “It was very traumatic and scary for us, my two-year-old didn’t know what was going on.

“One minute he was playing in the water with Clyde and the next he was getting dragged away from him.

“He just kept shouting ‘daddy’ and ‘Clyde’ while Lewis tried to save him, it was horrendous.

“Lewis had to give him CPR three times on the way to the vet, we thought he was gone at one point."

Clyde had been playing in the water for about two hours and then became extremely unwell and collapsed.

Vets told the family their dog had taken in too much water causing his blood to thin and glucose levels to drop.

She added: “We want to warn others about this. We had Clyde for three years and never heard of Water intoxication.

"It can happen to any dog if they take in too much water from a Loch, a paddling pool, or the sea.

“My husband Lewis grew up with dogs and never experienced it either.

“People need to be aware of this. It was such a real shock.”

Their beloved dog was put on a drip to relieve pressure on his brain but required emergency treatment.

As his condition deteriorated Joanne told she could either let him slip away at the vets or try treatment at an animal hospital overnight.

The mum said: “We wanted to try everything possible, he's family.

“We were allowed five minutes with him before he went away. It was horrendous he just wasn’t himself.

“After that we waited all night just staring at our phones hoping everything was all right and thankfully it was.

“Now he's home today is probably the first day he is completely back to himself.

“Lauchlin is really glad to have him back."
