Dog locked in hot car before being rescued by police at Leeds shopping park

A police officer has released shocking pictures of a dog that was spotted locked inside a car at a shopping park in Leeds during the midst of a heatwave.

With the mercury rising as high as 32°C on Wednesday, July 24, one careless dog owner in the city left their pet on the front passenger seat of their car while they went shopping at Colton Retail Park in east Leeds.

A member of the public told officers from the Outer East Leeds policing team, who said the dog started to 'pant and overheat', even though a window had been slightly opened.

A tannoy announcement was put out in the nearby Sainsbury's store - and the owner came out with their tail between their legs.

The dog was left in the car on one of the hottest days of the year (West Yorkshire Police)

A tweet from Sergeant Ian Micklethwaite said: "Just been waved down and alerted to a dog left in a car.

"Owner had gone shopping in the adjacent Supermarket. Tannoy Announcement made, owner returned.

"In the space of less than 10mins the dog was starting to pant / overheat. Just don’t do it."

There have been repeated calls from West Yorkshire Police and the RSPCA in recent days to take extra care to not over exert dogs during the recent spate of scorching weather.
