Dog left 'fighting for life' after eating bone owner bought from bargain store

A dog owner was left "crying her eyes out" after being told her pet dog might have to be put to sleep, after eating a bone she bought him from a bargain store.

Emma Porcu, 30, said she bought her dog, Toro, the bone as a treat but claims the three-year-old's health dramatically deteriorated hours after he ate it.

She claims after taking him to the vets  for x-rays she was told splinters from the bone had became stuck in his intestine and it would be too dangerous to operate on.

And she was given the devastating news her beloved pet "who she treats like a child" may have to be put down.

Emma, from Fazakerley , said: "I just want people to be aware of the dangers of buying bones.

"It's coming up to Christmas and so many people are going to buy these treats for their dogs.

"They'll end up with the same problem we have and have to face the decision if they're going to put their dog down."

Senior support worker Emma said she bought the ham bone described as a "100% natural serrano pork product, rich in Phosphorous and Calcium" on October 28.

However a few hours later, after eating the treat, Emma claims Toro became ill.

She said: "He just got sick, he was vomiting, he was screaming and he could not stand up.

"When we took him to the vets they did an X-ray on him and we were told it was lodged in his intestine.

"It has been eight days now and he still has to go back to the vets tomorrow.

"It has cost me over £500 for a £1 dog treat.

"Awareness needs to be made.

"Too many dogs are having this same problem."

Because of where the bone was located in Toro's body, Emma was told an operation on him to remove it would be incredibly risky.

Instead Toro has had to undergo enemas and take medication to try make him vomit or digest the bone.

Emma said: "I've not stopped crying. It feels like every dog is part of your family and we're just hoping we can do something for him."

During this time, Emma said Toro's eyes and ears swelled so big he couldn't see and fluid filled his ears.

She added: "Thankfully it looks like hes on the mend after a horrendous ordeal for him.

"He has been through it and I really hope worst is over and after all the fighting he still doesn't lose his life."
