Dog killed in Evanston house fire

The Evanston home that caught fire Nov. 20, 2019, in the 1000 block of Mulford Street. | Evanston Fire Department

A fire at an unoccupied home killed a family dog Wednesday in north suburban Evanston.

Firefighters were called to the home in the 1000 block of Mulford Street about 4:25 p.m. for reports of smoke coming from the roof and windows, Evanston fire officials said.

When they arrived, they found a fire in the first floor kitchen that had already begun to spread to the second floor, officials said.

No one was home at the time, but a pet dog trapped in the house died of smoke inhalation, officials said. No other injuries to civilians or firefighters were reported.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation. The extent of the damage was not immediately known.
