Dog has to have leg amputated after 'being used for badger baiting'

A dog suspected of being used in animal fighting was found abandoned outside a Merseyside animal sanctuary.

The dog, thought to be a Patterdale terrier-type, was found near the animal sanctuary on Spurriers Lane in the village of Melling, Sefton.

A passer-by took the dog to a vet who assessed the injuries as so severe that a leg had to be amputated.

The dog has been seized and taken into our care pending an investigation.

Jacob Lloyd, head of investigations at the Animal Protection Services charity, said: "I am extremely concerned that the dog has been used for badger baiting.

"The dog suffered a severe leg injury resulting in amputation along with historic facial injuries consistent with animal fighting."

He added: "It is so upsetting to think that someone has deliberately abandoned this dog after they have used him extensively for the persecution of wildlife. I am determined to find the preparator and bring them to justice."
