Dog found with wounds that exposed his skull finds happy home in foster care

A dog who was found with horrific head wounds that left his skull exposed has finally found his happy place in foster care.

Eoin - who was named after his rescuer - was discovered in December last year with injuries so severe that those who reported him thought he only had one eye. He was quickly rushed to My Lovely Horse Rescue’s vet John in Blackwater Vets and the appalling extent of his injuries was soon revealed.

“As a rescue charity our volunteers have witnessed the aftermath of cruelty to animals inflicted by humans,” said dog team volunteer Aoife Cunningham. “But nothing could have prepared anyone for this level of cruelty laid bare on such a small body.”

Eoin's swollen face was compromising his breathing. He had new and old puncture wounds, open wounds on his legs, and deep lacerations on his head that were so deep that his skull was visible.

Little Eoin spent a few hours at the vet where, despite his previous experience, he showed no aggression towards anyone. He allowed veterinary staff to clean his wounds and change his bandages regularly. He also took his medication with no issues, Aoife reported.

“This little boy’s determined spirit inspired all of us,” she said. Eoin gradually built up his confidence enough to go for short walks with the volunteers, eagerly greeted new people and was slowly adjusting to his new life, surrounded by toys, cosy blankets, a heat lamp, and ”endless amounts of love”.

“We all cried over the level of cruelty this boy had experienced and we were determined to give him a bright future, knowing he had a long road of treatment and rehabilitation ahead,” she said. Eoin has since entered a foster home and is now enjoying the taste of home comforts and regular walks to make new friends and visits to the dog park, where he has started to build up his confidence around other dogs.

“By fostering, two lives are saved,” Aoife said. “The dog in our care, and the dog that enters afterwards. As Eoin slowly leaves his past behind, his scars will still tell the story of our little Christmas miracle, so determined to defeat the odds stacked against him, a little boy that has continuously chosen love above all else.”
