Dog found 'sleeping on broken telly' in filthy back yard taken by RSPCA

A dog has been signed over to the RSPCA after neighbours were concerned it had been "abandoned" in piles of rubbish, and without food or water.

One woman, who lives on Jubilee Road in Crosby, says she could hear the dog, a Staffordshire Bull Terrier, "howl and cry all day and night".

She told the ECHO : "We are all extremely concerned as a dog is being mistreated, it is abandoned in an uninhabitable garden full of rubbish, with no food or water.

"We've contacted the RSPCA so many times."

She added: "We've started sharing our concerns on social media as a final resort because we are desperate for help."

A post on Facebook from September 25 said the dog was in "bad health and distress, malnourished and badly treated, with only a broken telly and smashed hoovers to lie on."

The RSPCA today confirmed the dog has been rescued.

An RSPCA spokeswoman told the ECHO : "We are grateful to members of the public for contacting us and would always urge anyone with concerns for animal welfare to ring us on 0300 123 4999.

"Today (Friday) we worked together with the owner of the Staffordshire Bull Terrier and the dog was signed over into RSPCA care.

"Unfortunately, we cannot give out specific details about individual circumstances."

According to its website, the RSPCA does not agree with dogs being kept outside, however it is not illegal to do so.

Part of the website continues: "The outdoors environment does need to be suitable for a dog to live in.

"As a charity with no legal powers, we don't have the authority to seize animals who are kept outdoors, as much as we may disagree on a personal level with how they may be kept.

"We will however do everything we can to help, such as talk with the owner and make actionable suggestions."

Anyone worried about a dog being kept outdoors, is urged to report concerns to the RSPCA's national cruelty line on 0300 1234 999.
