Dog food products sold at Pets at Home urgently recalled over vomiting and weight loss fears

Dog food stocked at stores such as Pets at Home have been urgently recalled over vomiting and weight loss fears.

Hills Pet Nutrition have issued an urgent product recall for a number of different items due to potentially elevated levels of vitamin D.

Ingestion of such levels can lead to symptoms such as vomiting, loss of appetite and weight loss, according to Chronicle Live.

Dog left requiring surgery every two days after mauling by German Shepherd in Pucklechurch

An explanation on Hills' website reads: "While vitamin D is an essential nutrient for dogs, ingestion of elevated levels can lead to potential health issues depending on the level of vitamin D and the length of exposure, and dogs may exhibit symptoms such as vomiting, loss of appetite, increased thirst, increased urination, excessive drooling, and weight loss.

"Vitamin D, when consumed at very high levels, can lead to serious health issues in dogs including renal dysfunction."

The list of the affected products is:

  • Hill’s Prescription Diet Canine i/d 360g
  • Hill’s Prescription Diet Canine Recovery Pack 360g
  • Hill’s Prescription Diet Canine k/d 370g
  • Hill’s Prescription Diet Canine r/d 350g
  • Hill’s Prescription Diet Canine w/d 370g
  • Hill’s Prescription Diet Canine z/d 370g
  • Hill’s Science Plan Canine Adult Advanced Fitness Chicken 370g
  • Hill’s Science Plan Canine Mature Adult Active Longevity Chicken 370g
Product recalls

The recall is in respect of cans with certain SKU numbers and dates on them. Those can be found on  the Hills website.

Hills are blaming the elevated levels of vitamin on "a supplier error".

Dog owners who purchased the product with the specific lot/date codes listed should discontinue feeding and dispose of those products immediately.
