Dog 'dragged over garden fence and put in van'

Two men have been arrested after a dog was allegedly dragged over a garden fence and put in a van in Co Antrim.

Police were alerted to the incident in Dundrod by a member of the public who was concerned the family pet was being dognapped.

Officers traced and stopped a van which has a republic of Ireland number plate, and discovered two dogs in the rear who were returned to their owners.

Two men were arrested and the vehicle was seized.

A PSNI spokesperson said: “Police received a report from a very vigilant member of the public who observed a red Southern registration van in the Dundrod area drag a dog over a fence before putting it in the back of the van and driving off at speed.

“Directions were given to police and members of the District Support Team and A section LPT managed to persuade the van to stop on the airport road.

“This story has a happy ending, dogs were still in the back of the van leading to two males arrested.

"The dogs returned unharmed to their rightful owner along with the van being seized by police.

“Everyone please microchip your dog, put a tag on its collar and keep an eye on your beloved pets the best you can.”

The officers thanked the member of the public for their vigilance and the vet for checking the health of the animals following the ordeal.
