Dog dies after tragic fall from cliffs near Souter Lighthouse

A dog has died after falling from a South Tyneside cliff.

Emergency services were called on Sunday to reports a dog had fallen from the cliff at Souter Lighthouse in South Shields.

Sunderland Coastguard Rescue Team, South Shields Volunteer Life Brigade and the RNLI - Sunderland Lifeboat Station attended the incident.

Rescuers lowered a rope rescue technician to recover the dog, but it tragically didn’t survive the fall.

A spokesman for the Sunderland Coastguard Rescue Team said: “Sunderland Coastguard Rescue Team, South Shields Volunteer Life Brigade (SSVLB) and RNLI - Sunderland Lifeboat Station were called out at lunchtime to a dog that had fallen from the cliff at Souter Lighthouse.

“On arrival we set up our rope rescue equipment and lowered a rope rescue technician to recover the dog.

“Sadly on this occasion the dog had not survived the fall.”
