Dog dies after falling from Northumberland cliff - despite desperate rescue bid

A dog has died after falling from a Northumberland cliff.

Emergency services were called to reports a dog had fallen over a cliff at Crag Point, just to the south of Collywell Bay, on Sunday at 3.40pm.

HM Coastguard paged the Tynemouth Volunteer Life Brigade (TVLB) and Blyth Coastguard Rescue Team and a brigade technician was lowered down the cliff to recover the dog.

He was then recovered to the cliff top and the dog was passed back into the care of its owner.

Sadly, the dog did not survive the fall and we send our condolences to the owners.

A spokesman for TVLB said: “Although it can be hard to control the enthusiasm of animals, we would recommend keeping a dog on a lead when near cliff edges, the sea, inland water and rivers.

“In the event of a coastal emergency please remember to dial 999 and call the Coastguard.

“This was the Brigade’s 10th incident in seven days and marks an unusually busy period for the rescue team.”
