A dog has sadly died after being hit by a Metro train.
The animal was struck at around 10.30am on Monday in the Hebburn area of South Tyneside. Metro staff rescued the dog, which was injured but still alive, from the line.
A veterinary surgeon was called and the dog was taken for further medical treatment. The pet has since passed away.
Metro services between Hebburn and South Shields were halted while staff dealt with the incident. The services resumed in affected area just before 11am.
A spokesperson for Nexus, which operates the Tyne and Wear Metro, said: "A dog was struck by a Metro train in the Hebburn area around 10.30am on Monday morning.
"Services were immediately halted between Hebburn and South Shields. Our staff went on to the line to rescue the dog, which was injured but still alive.
"A local veterinary surgeon was called and with the assistance of our staff the dog was taken off the line for further medical treatment.
"We have subsequently been notified of the sad news that the dog didn’t survive."
