Dog chucked in river in carrier bag weighed down with water bottles

A dog was found dead in a carrier bag that had been "weighed down by bottles".

The Yorkshire terrier-type dog was found in the River Afan in Port Talbot on Monday, July 15.

Leanne Pritchard-Kilinc, from Port Talbot, was in the area with her children when she spotted the dog before dragging it out and heading to the vets.

She said: "I was at the seating area next to the River Afan with my children just after 7pm on Monday.

"I saw the carrier bag in the river but could see fur. I thought it was a rug at first."

She said she pulled the bag and its contents from the river, but the dog was already dead.

"I took him to Pets at Home to see if they could find a microchip but there wasn't. I then took him to my vets and they said he was an older dog and had suffered trauma to the face."

The 42-year-old was with her children when she made the "horrendous" discovery.

She added: "There were two plastic bottles filled with water in the bag weighing it down.

"My children were with me at the time and my daughter was sobbing. It was horrendous.

"To see the water bottles in there made it all the more sinister. It was a nightmare."

The incident was reported to the RSPCA and the charity called it "deeply disturbing".

A spokesman said: "RSPCA Cymru can confirm we have received a shocking call alleging that a dead dog was found in a bag, weighed down by bottles, in a Port Talbot river.

"We understand the body of the dog was transferred to a veterinary practice.

"This sounds like a deeply disturbing and shocking incident. Anyone with information about what happened to this poor dog is urged to contact our 24-hour emergency line on 0300 1234 999."
