Dog buried alive found swollen, sunburned, cut and missing nearly all its fur

These heartbreaking pictures show a dog's burnt and swollen body after she was buried alive on a beach, with only her head poking out of the sand.

Leialoha the dog was missing 90 per cent of her fur when she was rescued from O'ahu beach, Hawaii, on Tuesday.

The canine apparently bled from every inch of her body when she had her first bath after her ordeal.

Animal rescue organisation PAWS of Hawaii was tipped off about Leialoha by a member of the public, who saw a man burying her.

PAWS shared pictures on Facebook showing her red-raw skin and cut marks, believed to have been inflicted with a rusty machete, on her front left leg.

Foster carer Amanda said the pictures broke her heart and motivated her to get in touch with PAWS to look after Leialoha.

She said : "I was scrolling Facebook while the girls were getting haircuts and saw that there was a dog on the west side of Oahu that had been buried in the sand and been cut on her leg with a machete.

"She was badly sunburned, covered in sores and missing most of her fur. My heart was broken and I knew she needed us to foster her."

The Good Samaritan added that the pooch bled from every inch of her body when she had her first bath on Thursday.

She stayed in her kennel nearly all the time when she first moved into her new home, however she is now starting to become more confident.

Amanda said: "Last night, she came out while we had friends over to see what was for dinner and has been liking being under the coffee table. She has a long way to go, but the worst is over."

Ku'ulei Durand, the executive director of PAWS of Hawaii, told KITV: "He (the owner) felt he was ending her suffering by trying to end her life, instead of getting her the help she needed.

"Her skin, if you were able to smell her, is rancid because she has so many open sores that are infected.

"The man who buried her, we were led to believe, had started to cut her."

More than $6,000 (£4,775) has been raised for the dog's veterinary and care bills through the PAWS Facebook page.
