Dog becomes 'violently' sick after getting too close to Lion's Mane jellyfish at Portmarnock beach in Dublin

A curious dog became "violently" ill after getting too close to a dangerous Lion's Mane jellyfish that had washed up on a north Dublin beach.

A local got in touch with the Portmarnock Community Association Facebook page to warn dog owners of the serious threat to life that the giant jellyfish pose.

Dublin's beaches have been infested with the huge sea creatures in recent weeks, leading both Dun Laoghaire-Rathdown and Fingal county councils to issue several warnings to beachgoers and swimmers.

The concerned dog owner posted: "Hi, I just wanted to let people know to keep their dogs away from jellyfish that are washed up on the beach.

"Our dog was investigating a lion's mane yesterday for just seconds before I realised what it was.

"She was violently ill minutes later, vomiting and swollen mouth and throat."

They added that thankfully the pup is doing better now, but wanted to warn others to be vigilant, with the massive creatures being spotted all along Dublin's beaches just this week alone.

Even when dead, jellyfish can still deliver their sting, which can cause serious injury to humans as well as dogs.

Followers of the page said that they had seen lion's manes - the world's largest jellyfish - in Portrane, Malahide, the Burrow Beach in Sutton, at Howth and in Dollymount in the past few days.

Fingal last week issued a renewed warning to bathers to be wary of the stinging sea monsters.
