Dog becomes first animal in the UK to contract Covid-19 after catching from its owner

A dog has become the first animal in the UK to contract Covid-19, according to the BBC.

It is understood that the dog caught the virus off its owner, and is now recovering home him with them.

Christine Middlemiss, the Chief Veterinary Officer in the UK, said: "The infected dog was undergoing treatment for another unrelated condition and is now recovering.

"It is very rare for dogs to be infected and they will usually only show mild clinical signs, and recover within a few days.

"There is no clear evidence to suggest that pets directly transmit the virus to humans. We will continue to monitor this situation closely and will update our guidance to pet owners should the situation change," she said.

While there have been no recorded cases of Covid-19 among pets in Ireland, those who own animals or work with them should wash their hands regularly to avoid the spread of the virus.

Just as Covid can transmit via surfaces such as door handles, it can also stick to animal fur and be passed on that way.

You should never share utensils, bowls or food with your dog.

If you have contracted Covid-19 and are self-isolating, avoid kissing or cuddling your dog. Don’t let them sleep in your bed either.

If possible, try to get someone to look after the dog while you’re quarantining. If you don’t have anyone to do this but are struggling, speak to your vet for assistance.

Respiratory issues, digestive problems and a temperature could all be signs of Covid-19 in pets. If you are concerned about your pet, call a vet and they will instruct you what to do next.

Along with domestic dogs and cats, a number of other animals have contracted Covid-19. Lions in captivity, ferrets, fruit bats, mink, non-human primates, pangolins, pigs, raccoon dogs, rodents and white-tailed deer have all been recorded as having the virus.
