Dog abandoned on NC500 Highlands route may have links to Glasgow or Renfrewshire

A dog which was abandoned on the North Coast 500 Highlands route may have links to Glasgow or Paisley, the SSPCA have said.

A male, white Staffordshire bull terrier was handed in to the Caithness and Sutherland Animal Rescue and Rehoming Centre on August 7. Later the same day another dog was spotted running free in the Durness area, North Sutherland.

The Staffie, whose name is Zero, was contained as his lead had become tangled around his legs.

Scottish SPCA senior inspector Andy Brown said: “The staffie was handed in to our centre on Friday. He is very friendly and has a lovely nature. He has been made comfortable at the centre.

“He was found with his collar and lead still attached.

“From the staffie’s microchip, we found his name is Zero and is registered in the Linwood area near Paisley. Initial enquiries also point to connections in Pollokshaws and Johnstone."

He also urged members of the public in the Laid area not to approach the other dog, an injured stray.

The "scared and frightened" brindle Rottweiler cross has been spotted running in and out of the traffic on the busy single-track road with his lead and collar still attached.

Andy added: “He is lame and very scared. If people do see him, please do not approach him. We don’t believe he is dangerous but if he is cornered, he may react negatively due to fear.

“If anyone does see him, contact us immediately with the location details."

The charity is keen to trace  the owners of these dogs as soon as possible.

If anyone recognises them, contact the confidential animal helpline on 03000 999 999.
