Does your house have what it takes to be a dream home? Here's what house buyers are looking for

It's not million pound homes or spas and gyms that the average Brit dreams about when picturing themselves buying a house, but a more modest three-bed.

A survey conducted by contemporary furniture brand Arlo and Jacob has revealed what home owners really want when they buy a home.

The survey asked 1,000 UK residents what their ultimate dream home would look like and what their 'must-have' features would be in each room.

To begin with, potential home owners aren't looking for endless bedrooms, they want a home that fits their needs and that seems to be a house with three bedrooms. The survey showed 40.2 percent of those surveyed would opt for a modest three-bedroom - only 4.5 percent wanted a house with five bedrooms or more.

And we are loving our neighbours it seems -  27.6 percent wanted a semi-detached. In fact, features that helped with socialising were high on the list. An island in the kitchen was requested by 42% percent of those surveyed, while 37 percent said big patio doors that opened out onto a garden would tick their box.

Gardens are important features too - 40 percent dream of the having a back garden, and 37.2 percent would like an outdoor cooking area and barbecue out there.

As for luxury items in the garden - hot tubs, summer houses and pools all scored in the mid 20 percent region.

Of course smart appliances got a look in as well with 32.3 percent of the people surveyed feeling the need for a smart fridge, washing machine and dishwasher, while the coffee lovers out there opted for a coffee machine to be included in the kitchen arrangement. Over half said their dream lounge would include a smart TV.

Items that make our lives more comfortable scored high.  A big open fireplace was a winner with 41 percent of UK residents and nearly 60 percent would love an en suite to their master bedroom and 34.4 percent would like a balcony in their bedroom.
