It’s easy to turn your nose up and roll your eyes at the dedicated superfans who choose to add another dimension to the cinema-going experience by arriving in costume. It’s also understandable to get a bit peeved if their headdress starts to obscure your view of the screen ...

But with the increase of Secret Cinema and in a time of multiple franchises with fervent followings, it’s becoming more commonplace.

With the release of Star Wars: The Force Awakens on the horizon, US cinema chains Cinemark and AMC have both decided to prohibit mask-wearing and lightsaber-carrying as a reaction to the cinema-based shootings in recent years. It could be the beginning of the end for fancy dress fans at the movies.
