Does Jessica Jones have a daughter in Daredevil: Born Again season 2, and where is Luke Cage?

Krysten Ritter as Jessica Jones in Daredevi: Born Again season 2.

Daredevil: Born Again season 2 is on the home stretch, but Jessica Jones is finally back on our screens.

It's been seven years since we last saw our favorite leather-jacket-wearing vigilante, and things are definitely a bit different. Marvel prematurely revealed, in a promo prior to Daredevil: Born Again episode 6, that Jessica Jones is indeed a mother now... and that may or may not have blown your mind (if you aren't familiar with the comics, anyway).

We've got everything you need to know (so far, anyway) below about Jessica's journey into motherhood and also what may or may have happened to her ex-lover Luke Cage... It goes without saying, of course, that there are massive spoilers ahead for Daredevil: Born Again season 2 episode 6 ahead, so turn back now if you've yet to see the latest episode.

At the beginning of Daredevil: Born Again season 2 episode 6, we see a little girl playing inside a house we haven't seen yet. Armed men suddenly swarm the outside of the home, with one throwing a bomb into the living room. As the little girl picks up the bomb and starts to play with it, the men outside start getting taken down one by one by an unknown assailant. After all of them are defeated, Jessica Jones walks into the living room, takes the bomb out of the little girl's hand, and diffuses it. We learn later that it was likely Mr. Charles (who may be morally ambiguous rather than evil at this point, though we're not sure just yet), who ordered the attack on Jessica's house.

At the same time, we learn that the little girl's name is Danielle, as Jessica tells Matt that her priorities have changed now that she has a daughter. Unless the show decides to do some wild retcon, Luke Cage is absolutely the father of Danielle... as Danielle Cage is the name of Luke and Jessica's child in the comics. Jessica remarks that Luke's whereabouts are unknown, with none other than Mr. Charles telling her that he's overseas somewhere. It's worth noting that Jessica made sure her address was unknown to even friends and acquaintances, and that she was living away from trouble with her daughter. We're not sure what happened in the seven years since the Jessica Jones season 3 finale, which saw New York City embrace her as a hero, as it seemed like she planned to stay.

Are Jessica Jones and Luke Cage still together?

In short: we don't know. The last time we saw Luke and Jessica together was Jessica Jones season 3 episode 13, which was the final episode of the series. He shows up in a nice suit, cementing his status as the owner of the Harlem Paradise and essentially Harlem's new Kingpin, and dips after convincing her to take down her family.

Prior to this, the two had quite the rocky relationship: after getting together in season 1, Luke finds out that Jessica killed his wife (though she more or less had to under the control of Kilgrave), and it doesn't exactly go well... though they do end up making up. In the Jessica Jones season 1 finale, however, Jessica returns to her apartment and Luke is gone. Jessica doesn't appear in Luke Cage season 1 or 2 either. And given that it's been seven years since we last saw Luke and Jessica together, it's possible that they haven't seen each other at all in the meantime... or that there was some romantic reconnection in between. Since Luke is set to appear in Daredevil: Born Again season 3, I'm sure we'll find out soon enough.

It's worth noting that Marvel's upcoming book release, Truth to Power: A Luke Cage Crime Novel, is not canon to the MCU and has a Jessica/Luke storyline that is completely unrelated.

Where is Luke Cage?

It's been seven years since Luke Cage took over Black Mariah's turf and became owner of the Harlem Paradise... so what's happened in the meantime?

As a refresher, Tilda Johnson kills "Black" Mariah Dillard, owner of the Harlem Paradise, in the Luke Cage season 2 finale. At the end of the episode, Mariah's will is read, and she left the Paradise to Cage. This worries Mercedes Knight, who is concerned that Cage will end up like Black Mariah... but he accepts the club anyway and technically becomes the new Kingpin of Harlem. We see Luke one last time in Jessica Jones season 3 episode 13, where he briefly shows up in a snappy suit and convinces Jessica to take down her sister. We know that he still owns the Paradise at this point... but we don't know what's happened in the last seven years. It's possible that we'll learn everything in Daredevil: Born Again season 3, which features a full Defenders reunion.

Daredevil: Born Again season 2 is out now on Disney Plus. Stay up to date with our Daredevil: Born Again season 2 release schedule, or check out our Daredevil: Born Again season 2 review.
