Does it matter where Newcastle United finish this season? Have your say on the Magpies' season

The 2021/22 Premier League season is coming to a close and it’s safe to say that it’s been an eventful campaign for Newcastle United. There have been a number of changes at St James’ Park with new owners, a change of manager and several new faces added to the squad.

The club currently sit two places below their 12th placed finish last season with two games left to play - but does it matter where they finish this season given their new long-term ambitions? Newcastle finished 14 points off a place in the top half last season but have a much better chance this time around, with just two point separating them and Leicester City in 10th.

Newcastle can mathematically finish anywhere from 17th to 9th. There’s no doubt a place in the country’s top ten would show them in a more attractive light when it comes to potential transfer targets - as well as boost confidence within the existing squad ahead of the new season.

However, you could argue that given the disruptive nature of the campaign, especially prior to the takeover, that the club’s main objective was survival and the overall finish is not a priority. Changes are expected this summer regardless of course, but could a lower finish in the table mean more are made than previously thought? Will a lower place finish put off potential summer targets?
