Does Broncos’ backup QB situation signal team may look for help in the draft?

Joe Flacco is going to be the Broncos’ starting quarterback so for the second summer in a row, there should be no starting quarterback controversy in Denver.

But Case Keenum was made the clear starting quarterback before the season started last year and most fans knew he wasn’t going to be a long-term answer. Despite John Elway saying that he feels Flacco is in the prime of his career, does it seem any different for Flacco?

Having Flacco might prevent the Broncos from taking a guy like Dwayne Haskins or Drew Lock in the first round, but should the team take a look at adding a rookie on Day 2 or Day 3 of the draft?

Behind Flacco, the Broncos have only the recently re-signed Kevin Hogan and former Colorado State passer Garrett Grayson.

Hogan was claimed off waivers last September by the Broncos, who are his fourth NFL team. Grayson holds most of the major passing records at Colorado State but the former third-round pick has been a major disappointment at the professional level.

In fact, since being drafted by the New Orleans Saints in 2015, he’s yet to ever take a snap in a regular season game.

For those thinking that the backup quarterback situation doesn’t matter, there’s always the chance of injury. In addition to that, Flacco was not able to win back the starting job from Lamar Jackson after he returned from injury last season.

The Ravens went on to make the playoffs, something that would not have happened if Flacco had been leading the charge.

The Broncos won’t have that luxury of depending on a backup with the current depth at quarterback. There is no way that they will turn to either Hogan or Grayson unless it’s an absolute emergency.

For that reason alone, it stands to reason that John Elway and his staff may be looking to draft a quarterback in April.

Will Grier of West Virginia, Clayton Thorson of North Western, Jarrett Stidham of Auburn and North Carolina State’s Ryan Finley are some of the quarterbacks the Broncos could take in the mid to late rounds of the draft to add more depth at the position and find a true understudy to Flacco.
