Does a lap dancing club being allowed to stay open really make Manchester 'seedy'?

A lap dancing club near Deansgate station has been allowed to remain open by Manchester City Council, despite an objection that it makes the area look 'seedy'.

Obsessions strip club on Whitworth Street West has been open since 2006. But a city council committee, which was discussing renewal of the club's sex establishment licence, heard an objection from a resident calling for the business to move.

The objector, whose name was redacted in council papers, said: "I have frequently thought that the presence of the strip club Obsessions, on the doorstep of one of our big intercity stations, brings the area into disrepute.

"Its exterior is poorly maintained, hinting at the seedy activity that occurs within. It seems very strange that visitors to our beautiful and culturally rich city centre, including international visitors and families with children, have to walk past the front door of such a repulsive establishment as they form their first impression of Manchester."

Heath Thomas, for Obsessions, told the town hall hearing the objection was on 'moral grounds', which is not a reason to refuse the licence. Also, police had inspected the premises and said it was meeting the conditions of its licence.

But what do you think? Does Obsessions make the area look 'seedy' and should it be closed down? Or should it be allowed to stay open?
