April 16--The attorney for Yasiel Puig is negotiating a settlement to a federal lawsuit that faults the Dodgers outfielder for the alleged torture and imprisonment of a Cuban man.
A filing Tuesday in U.S. District Court in Miami by attorneys for the plaintiff, Miguel Angel Corbado Daudinot, asked the court for more time to pursue a deal.
"The gap between the parties' respective positions is not wide and may be breached with further negotiation," the filing said.
Daudinot, who remains in Cuba, sued Puig for $12 million in 2013 under the Torture Victims Protection Act. In the lawsuit, Daudinot claimed that Puig erroneously linked him to human trafficking, resulting in a seven-year prison sentence in Cuba.
Puig's attorney has denied the allegations.
Tuesday's filing asked the court for an additional two weeks to exchange expert discovery because "the parties are in the process of negotiating a settlement." Judge Kathleen Williams approved the request.
"The parties believe that they may be able to reach an understanding given just a little more time," the filing said.
Sean Santini, Puig's attorney, didn't immediately respond to a request for comment Wednesday.
The case is scheduled for trial in November.
