Dodgers star Alex Vesia’s wife calls opening day ‘bittersweet’ amid family’s personal tragedy

Kayla Vesia, the wife of Dodgers star Alex Vesia, commemorated a “very bittersweet opening day” at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles, months after the devastating loss of their newborn daughter.

Thursday’s game marked the relief pitcher’s first regular-season game since his return to the team following his months-long hiatus to deal with the personal tragedy.

Kayla, 29, was there in support of her husband, who watched from the bullpen as his teammates carried the team to an 8-2 victory against the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Sharing a photo of herself standing in front of a sign that read “Wild NL West Saloon,” Kayla wrote on Instagram, “A very bittersweet opening day. What I would give to have my Sterling girl here, carrying her in my heart always.”

“I LOVE YOU SOOO MUCH!!” Alex, 29, commented below, alongside three red heart emojis.

He also shared a heartfelt Instagram post that evening, saying: “Same goals… different perspectives… new motivations. Thankful for everyone who has stuck by me. Dodger Nation gonna bring the energy. I’m going to make you proud SSV.”

Alex included a photograph of himself walking off the field, pointing to the sky. “You’re making our babygirl so proud. I love you!” Kayla added in the comments.

The pair, who have been married since 2024, announced they were expecting their first baby in April 2025. However, in October, they shared that their daughter, Sterling Sol, had died days after she was born.

At the time, Alex and his team were preparing for their first game of the 2025 World Series against the Toronto Blue Jays.

The Dodgers organization later released a statement on Instagram, saying: “It’s with a heavy heart that we share that Alex Vesia is away from the team as he and his wife Kayla navigate a deeply personal family matter. The entire Dodgers organization is sending our thoughts to the Vesia family, and we will provide an update at a later date.”

Kayla, known for posting lifestyle content on social media, took a break from it as she dealt with the loss. She made an emotional return in January.

“You know, I don’t have much to say, honestly,” she began the TikTok video. “Alex and I are just trying to get through it every day. Every day is so different for us right now, and I don’t really have the words.”

She continued: “I did want to come on here. I share a lot of Alex and I’s life on here. It just felt right to come and say thank you. I am really grateful for the community of you guys and just expressing your love and support with us. It really has brought us a lot of comfort during this.”

Kayla explained that before the birth of her baby, she had “prepared for everything, prepared for whatever was going to happen.”

“But I wasn’t prepared for not taking my baby home,” she added as her voice broke. She concluded by wishing followers a happy New Year, disclosing that she “doesn’t know what this year is going to bring,” before reiterating: “I’ll slowly be getting back on here.”
