LOS ANGELES _ Corey Seager has another body part in need of surgery.
Already out for the 2018 season after ligament-replacement surgery on his right elbow, the two-time All-Star shortstop will have arthroscopic surgery on his left hip Tuesday in New York, the Los Angeles Dodgers announced.
In a release announcing the surgery, the Dodgers indicated Seager was expected to resume baseball activities in January.
Seager played the second half of 2017 with inflammation and bone chips in the elbow. He tore the ulnar collateral ligament in April and had the surgery soon after. The injury overshadowed a minor tweak to his hip that occurred a few days earlier and cost him a couple days.
In Seager's absence, the Dodgers acquired four-time All-Star Manny Machado from Baltimore as a replacement. Machado can play third base and shortstop, but has indicated he would prefer to be a shortstop as he enters free agency after this season.
The Dodgers are expected to pursue Machado this offseason. There would still be a logjam with Seager at shortstop and Justin Turner at third base, but the team could theoretically move Cody Bellinger to the outfield and ask Turner to learn first base.
"Manny has to make his own decision. But we'll have Corey back in a Dodgers uniform next year," manager Dave Roberts said.
