Doddie Weir welomes move to help MND sufferers get blue badges

Scots rugby legend Doddie Weir has welcomed a promise to look at speeding up access to disability parking badges for motor neurone disease sufferers.

He was in the on Thursday to listen to campaigning for automatic blue badges.

Afterwards, Weir said: “If you’ve got , you should be able to get the badge which should allow people with to live a normal-ish life.

“I’m very happy with how the debate went – there were a lot of friends in there arguing on my behalf.

“Not just myself but people with MND will be chuffed as well.”

Scottish Government minister Paul Wheelhouse stopped short of automatically enrolling sufferers.

But he vowed to reopen the code of practice which states that local authorities should fast-track terminally ill people.

“The code hasn’t been updated since 2014 and we're conscious society’s needs and user expectations have changed significantly,” Wheelhouse said.

“Therefore, I can confirm today that we will revise and refresh the statutory code of practice in partnership with organisations such as .”

MND attacks nerves, progressively stopping people from using their muscles. More than half of sufferers die with two years.
