Documentary on 'mysterious' death of West Lothian woman Kirsty Maxwell to air on TV tonight

A documentary is airing tonight on the tragic case of West Lothian woman Kirsty Maxwell who fell from the 10th floor of an apartment block in Benidorm.

In 2017 Kirsty travelled to Benidorm with a group of friends for a hen party, but her body was tragically found one morning by the pool of the hotel.

27-year-old Kirsty, who was from Edinburgh but lived in Livingston, plunged to her death at the Apartamentos Payma hotel in Benidorm, Spain, on the morning of April 29, 2017.

The MTV documentary series True Life Crime UK, will examine the mystery surrounding her death.

The BBC reported how Kirsty was filmed by friends before she died, asleep in her room at 6.50am. But sometime after that, she was found dead at the pool.

It is understood that she entered an apartment on the floor above that was occupied by five British men at the time.

According to Spanish police, the five men were investigated and it was ruled that her death was accidental.

However, retired detective David Swindle who has been working with her family in an attempt to establish the full circumstances feels that an investigation carried out by the Spanish authorities at the time was "flawed" and there are various lines of enquiry which weren't followed up.

He hopes the new documentary hosted by journalist Linda Adey, will generate leads, and help put pressure on the authorities to follow fresh lines of enquiry.

He told Edinburgh Live : "The hope from everybody is that this documentary will generate more publicity around the case, and encourage people who might know something to come forward.

"There are various issues it will look at and examine, and it's hoped that could lead to new information."

The episode of True Crime Live UK airs at 10pm on MTV.
