Doctors will struggle to stop 'determined' Queen attending event despite rest order

Palace aides have told how doctors will have their work cut out trying to prevent the Queen attending the Remembrance Day parade, despite her being ordered to rest.

Medics urged the 95-year-old to take it easy for at least a fortnight, meaning she will not be at the Festival of Remembrance at the Royal Albert Hall on November 13.

But a senior royal source said the armistice commemoration, which takes place a day later, is “one of the few dates that is completely and utterly cemented in the Queen’s annual diary”.

The insider added: “The doctors who are advising Her Majesty to rest would have to have a very strong case to stop her going.

“It remains her firm intention to be present for the National Service of Remembrance on Remembrance Sunday.

“Her Majesty regrets she will be unable to attend the Festival of Remembrance on Saturday, November 13.”

The Queen is understood to be “incredibly saddened” at missing that event.

But the source added: “Doctors are satisfied this is the best course of action right now. "

The Queen’s condition is unknown although sources insisted she “is in good spirits” and taking it easy at Windsor Castle.

Buckingham Palace said last night: “Following on from their recent advice that the Queen should rest for a few days, Her Majesty’s doctors have advised that she should continue to rest for at least the next two weeks.

The doctors have advised that Her Majesty can continue to undertake light, desk-based duties during this time, including some virtual audiences, but not to undertake any official visits.”

The Queen has only missed six Remembrance Sundays at the Cenotaph during her 69-year reign.

She was on royal tours around the world for four of those and two absences were owing to being pregnant. The monarch was last present at the Festival of Remembrance in 2019. A virtual event was held due to Covid curbs last year.

She had already pulled out of addressing world leaders in person at the COP26 climate change summit in Glasgow on Monday, as she continues to recover from an overnight stay in hospital last Wednesday where she underwent “preliminary investigations”.

The Mirror revealed yesterday the Queen has had to give up her beloved pursuit of riding until the spring after reportedly suffering “discomfort” several weeks ago while out on her horse during her summer break at Balmoral. Since being admitted to hospital she has also been unable to walk her dogs during the day, a pastime she takes on religiously to get out.

Sources have remarked on the Queen’s “relentless schedule” of late, especially after returning from her summer break in Scotland.
