Doctors warn against viral 'health trend' as TikTok star shoves garlic up her nose to 'clear sinuses'

Doctors have urged people not to take part in a potentially dangerous trend on TikTok that involves putting garlic cloves up your nostrils.

Recently, influencers have shoved the vegetable parts into their noses to help "clear their sinuses."

It comes amid growing worries of seasonal flu as the weather begins to get colder.

Rozaline Katherine, 29, decided to try out the tip after seeing it on TikTok and her clip has racked up millions of views.

In a video that has been viewed more than 4.3 million times, Rozaline can be seen inserting the garlic cloves into her nostrils.

She waits 10-15 minutes and then removes them.

The content creator is stunned as she films her nose running and declares that, in her opinion, the method works.

"I didn’t think it was actually going to work which is why I filmed it more as a joke,” Rozaline, from Arizona, US, said.

However, according to Shape, medical professionals strongly advise against putting whole cloves of garlic in your nostrils.

Neil Bhattacharyya, M.D., an ear, nose, and throat doctor at Mass Eye and Ear said the hack could have unpleasant consequences, including contact dermatitis.

He said: If you do this enough, the body will start to react to the oils and chemicals in the garlic and cause contact dermatitis in the nose.

"Some garlic cloves are really strong, and if you get enough leaching of the chemicals and oils into your nose, it will definitely irritate it."
