Doctors say 99-year-old fundraising hero Tom Gilzean has been 'very lucky' after tram stop fall

Doctors have said fundraising legend Tom Gilzean has been "very lucky" after being hurt in a fall in Edinburgh city centre.

Medics rushed to the aid of the 99-year-old at around 10am yesterday (August 21).

A number of eyewitnesses told Edinburgh Live that the local hero had fell from his wheelchair at the York Place tram stop.

Edinburgh Trams suspended services to parts of the city while emergency service attended the scene.

Tom's son, Douglas Gilzean, has now shared a message in a post Tom Gilzean Appreciation Society's Facebook page on behalf of his father.

He said: "On behalf of my father Tom, I would like to thank you all for your very good wishes.

"I have just spoke to the hospital doctor and they advise that he has had a full body scan and so far they have not found anything untoward.

"He has a cut and a bump on his head, sore chest and hand and still to X-ray his hand but they feel that at his age, 99, he's been very lucky."

He added: "I will pass on all your good wishes."

Members of the public have been commenting wishing Tom a "speedy recovery", with one woman saying: "He is such a gentleman and so loved."

Tom is a familiar face on Princes Street and has raised more than £1 million for the Sick Kids hospital through his efforts.
