Doctors in Israel Demand Better Working Conditions

With the new coronavirus case rate levelling out and closure of all medical centers dedicated to treat patients, two huge protests took place in Israel against the government’s fiscal policy.

A total of 3,000 doctors protested and called for increasing the budget allocated for hospitals and reducing working hours for medical teams. Citizens showed compassion with them, despite the fact that the protests disrupted traffic.

The number of deaths from coronavirus rose to 248 Sunday, while the total number of confirmed infections increased to 16,458, according to the Health Ministry. There are currently 4,826 active cases in Israel, and 65 patients are in serious condition.

This indicates a drop of COVID-19 cases as the country eases restrictions.

However, defeating the pandemic puts the Israeli government in a direct clash with several segments of society.

Following protests of merchants who complained that the government looted their taxes, thousands of trainee doctors protested their working conditions after they had to cover 26-hour shifts.

Arab municipal and local authorities have also gone on strike since last Tuesday against the scarcity of government supplies allocated to them and discrimination in favor of Jewish municipalities.

The government allocated 3 billion shekels to compensate the municipalities but only 47 million shekels for Arab authorities.

Also, the Druze and Circassians authorities are leading their own battle, accusing the government of turning its back to anyone who isn’t Jewish.
