Doctors have identified a new symptom linked to coronavirus

A new coronavirus symptom to look out for has been issued by medical experts - with doctors warning abdominal pain could be a key sign.

The warning comes after a 37-year-old nurse in Queensland discovered he had the virus after experiencing abdominal pain.

Deputy Premier and Health Minister Steven Miles said: "He identified he had abdominal pain, not normally considered a symptom of Covid-19, but he was incredibly wise and he identified that that was a symptom that could be from Covid-19.

"He went and got tested and that test came back positive."

Currently, the NHS only lists three coronavirus symptoms - a high temperature, a new continuous cough, and a loss of your sense of smell or taste.

Mr Miles added that regularly monitoring your health can ensure any unusual symptoms are flagged quickly.

He said: "We can all do the right thing by monitoring our health and if we have any symptoms at all that are of any cause for concern, we can go and get tested – so we thank him very much for that.”

This isn't the first time the experts have discovered a link between abdominal pain and coronavirus, reports The Mirror.

In May, a study published by the Royal College of Physicians revealed that a number of Covid-19 patients in France had presented with abdominal pain, but no pulmonary symptoms.

The researchers, led by Gérald Gahide, wrote: "Even though coronaviruses are considered as respiratory viruses mostly transmitted via the airways, primary or secondary oral contamination may be responsible for these abdominal symptoms.

"This is of great importance because this implies that, as long as the Covid-19 pandemic is ongoing, patients presenting with this symptomatology should be managed as potentially infected and Covid-19 diagnostic tests should be performed."
