Doctors find another possible symptom of coronavirus

Doctors have said there is a new coronavirus symptom people should be looking out for to help diagnose the disease.

The experts from a university hospital in Spain say they found the sign in many of the patients they examined.

The key symptoms of the coronavirus that causes Covid-19 are fever and a dry cough - with a list of other symptoms people should be aware of.

The NHS includes a loss of taste or smell as one of the three key signs.

The World Health Organisation also lists tiredness, aches and pains, a sore throat, diarrhoea, conjunctivitis, a headache and a rash as less common symptoms.

Now doctors from Roman y Cajal University Hospital in Madrid say there is another sign to watch for.

They examined 21 coronavirus patients between March 30 and April 8 and 29% had oral cavity lesions, while 83% had small purple, red or brown spots in their mouths.

In a study published in JAMA Dermatology, the researchers, led by Juan Jimenez-Cauhe, wrote: “This work describes preliminary observations and is limited by the small number of cases and the absence of a control group."

In the USA, the CDC also lists shortness of breath, congestion or a runny nose and nausea or vomiting as possible symptoms.
