Doctors filmed breaking lockdown for engagement party that sparked Covid outbreak

Doctors have been filmed breaking lockdown for an engagement party that sparked a Covid outbreak.

The private gathering saw 69 people get together at the celebration, with a number of guests going on to test positive for coronavirus in the days following.

Health authorities in the area of St Kilda, Victoria, in Australia, remain concerned the party could become a super-spreading event as Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews tightened restrictions and reimposed a curfew as a result.

Police are also investigating the breach of public health orders, reports news.com.au.

The Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) said the probe followed a number of complaints about registered health practitioners who allegedly attended the gathering.

In a statement, they said: “We are aware that Victoria Police have stated that they intend to take action with respect to individuals who attended the event.

"We will liaise with them in relation to any registered health practitioners who were present.

“National Boards remind health practitioners their professional behaviour extends to acting in accordance with the law.

“All health practitioners should ensure that they are aware of their legal obligations and act in accordance with them.

“National Boards can and will take action for failing to comply with legal obligations in your state or territory."

Footage of the celebration showed the groom-to-be, a part-time teacher and law student, joking about holding a party in breach of Victoria’s Covid-19 restrictions.

One person joked: “Clearly this is legal because this is a group-therapy session."
