Doctor with coronavirus raises £1,300 for the NHS after running 11km... in her garden

A doctor has raised more than £1,300 for NHS charities by running 11km around her 10m-long garden - despite suffering from coronavirus.

Gemma Buston tested positive for COVID-19 and went into isolation on Friday, April 17 - the same day she was nominated by a friend to complete the 5km challenge currently popular on social media.

With nowhere else to run, the 28-year-old decided to take on the task in the garden of her home in Monton, Salford, where she lives with fiance Luke Mills.

But, things didn't go to plan.

"My friend nominated me to do the 5km run that people have been doing and I decided to do it in my garden because I've been in self-isolation," Gemma explained.

"I put my usual tracker on that I use for runs but it didn't work it out properly and I ended up running for a lot longer."

Rather than finishing 5km of her garden as planned, Gemma wound up running for more than an hour and a half and completing an estimated 11.6km.

Her impressive efforts have earned £1,340 in donations so far, which will go to the Bolton NHS Charitable Fund.

The fund aims to pay for vital equipment needed by hospital staff and Gemma hopes to make even cash for them.

"My original target was that I wanted to get to £500," she explained.

"I'm really pleased with how much people have donated but now I'm hoping we can raise even more."

Although she currently works in the mental health ward at Trafford General Hospital, Gemma previously worked at the Royal Bolton Hospital where her partner Luke is a junior doctor in A&E.

The pair are self-isolating together and have both been suffering from coronavirus symptoms including a cough, aching and tiredness.

They were due to be married at the end of May but have been forced to postpone the wedding until 2022 because of the lockdown.
