Doctor Who star Matt Smith joins Jared Leto on Morbius film set in Manchester

Doctor Who star Matt Smith joined Jared Leto in Manchester as filming continued on new blockbuster Morbius.

The actor, who played the eleventh incarnation of The Doctor in the cult BBC series and also stars as Prince Philip in Netflix drama The Crown, will play villain Loxius Crown in the Spider-Man spin-off.

He was pictured strolling through the Northern Quarter dressed in a grey suit as the area doubled for downtown New York again.

A stunt double was also seen swooping on a wire from a building to land on top of a crash mat in Port Street, where a Manhattan subway station frontage has been installed.

A vintage Mustang and yellow taxis were also seen parked up in the area.

Film crews have been in Manchester since Friday, filling the streets with props including yellow taxis and traffic lights, a blue and white New York City bus, news stands and blue U.S. Mail postboxes.

Leto was also Jared Leto spotted in Manchester filming new Spider-Man spin-off Morbius . The Blade Runner and Suicide Squad star plays the title role of Dr Michael Morbius, a scientist who turns himself into a vampire when he attempts to cure himself of a rare blood disease.

Leto, who also fronts the band Thirty Seconds to Mars, was clocked dressed in a black coat with his hood up and swigging from a hip flask as he filmed scenes with True Detective star Adria Arjona, who plays Morbius's fiancé Martine Bancroft.

Filming is expected to continue this weekend and crews are set to return on April 6 and 7 according to road closure signs in the area.

Manchester has formed the backdrop to a number of big budget films and TV series in recent years, including Peaky Blinders, a remake of Snatch starring Harry Potter actor Rupert Grint, BBC war drama World on Fire and Sky series Curfew. Marvel's Captain America was also partly filmed on Dale Street in 2011.
