Doctor Who's John Barrowman says next Doctor 'could be gay or bisexual'

John Barrowman has told that the next Doctor could be gay or bisexual.

The Captain Jack Harkness star, who's come in and out of the BBC time-travelling romp since its 2005 reboot, said that the Doctor's sexuality "doesn't matter" to the audience.

John, who last year landed a spot on the Dancing On Ice judges' bench, also refused to rule out a romance between him and the titular Time Lord.

The Doctor - an alien who can change his/her face - is recast every three or so series.

Back in 2017, it was announced that Jodie Whittaker would be taking on the role, the first woman to do so after a string of male actors.

"Of course the next Doctor could be gay," John told The Daily Telegraph, "The Doctor could be bisexual, the Doctor could be fluid, whatever, it doesn't matter.

"The Doctor is an alien that can try anything and everything. And that's where the audience is right now."

John added that the upcoming new year special could see romantic sparks fly between John's Jack and Jodie's Doctor.

"Jack doesn't recognise the shell, he recognises the two hearts and the soul of the Doctor," he remarked.

"Jack doesn't give a damn that she's in a female body, a male body or an alien body. Jack will have sex with anything with a postcode."

Harking back to a 2005 episode, when Christopher Eccleston was playing the Doctor, he recalled: "I remember when I kissed the Doctor and Rose [Billie Piper] in the same episode, a journalist said, 'Well, that was shocking for the nation.'

"I said, 'Really? Because you're probably the one who has a problem with it.'"

The star recently told The Mirror that he'd make a full time return at the drop of a hat.

"There's no question, I'd say yes," he said.

*Doctor Who's new year special, Revolution of the Daleks, airs on BBC One at 6:45pm on New Year's Day.
