Doctor Who's festive special has already been filmed, says star Mandip Gill

Doctor Who's festive special has already been filmed.

That's according to one of sci-fi show's leading actresses, Mandip Gill.

The Yasmin Khan actress confirmed that they shot a "festive episode" - many other shows had to bring production and filming to a halt amid the coronavirus crisis.

The episode will be titled Revolution of the Daleks - teasing the return of the Doctor's nemeses - and is expected to air later this year.

"I can confirm that [it's already been shot]," Mandip, who joined the show in 2018 alongside Tosin Cole and Bradley Walsh, told Entertainment Weekly.

"There is a festive episode. We happened to be quite lucky and fit it in, so that will be exciting."

The special was announced in March, following the end of the twelfth series, which raised the question of how many incarnations the Doctor has really had.

Showrunner and head writer Chris Chibnall said: "We can't leave the Doctor there!

"On that cliffhanger! Well, we did.

"But rest assured, the Doctor and her friends will be back for a one-off extended special around Christmas and New Year."

Chris did say, though, that he's uncertain about when the show will be aired.

"I don't know when they're going to put it on yet. Otherwise we'd tell you!

Captain Jack made a comeback (BBC)

"There will be Daleks. There will be exterminations. Thrills, laughter, tears. You know, the usual. See you at the end of the year."

With Jodie Whittaker as the titular Time Lord, the series saw the return of John Barrowman's Captain Jack Harkness.

Mandip added: "When you work with someone like John Barrowman, it's like working with the Daleks or the Cybermen, they're such an embedded part of Doctor Who history that you feel privileged to be working with him."

Actress Jo Martin also made an appearance, as a past incarnation of the Doctor.

Mandip even admitted she's resorted to getting others to explain the major twists and turns of Chris' scripts.
