Doctor Who return date revealed with Jodie Whittaker making dramatic exit

By James Brinsford

Doctor Who is set to return for the 13th series of the revival with the show hitting BBC One and BBC iPlayer later this month.

This will be the last time that Jodie Whittaker will appear as the Time Lord and the first episode of the new series will hit screens on October 31 and in keeping with the date, it will be a Halloween-themed drama.

It was revealed in July that showrunner Chris Chibnall will also leave the iconic sci-fi show, along with Jodie, who will be quitting the role in 2022.

Jodie paid tribute to the Doctor Who team when she announced that she was leaving.

She said: "In 2017 I opened my glorious gift box of size 13 shoes. I could not have guessed the brilliant adventures, worlds and wonders I was to see in them. I will carry the Doctor and the lessons I’ve learnt forever."

Jodie also claimed that being the Doctor was "the best job I have ever had" and was thankful to Chris for the storylines that she has had.

Jodie added: "I know change can be scary and none of us know what’s out there. That’s why we keep looking. Travel hopefully. The universe will surprise you. Constantly."

Chris Chibnall said about the show in July: "Jodie and I made a ‘three series and out’ pact with each other at the start of this once-in-a-lifetime blast. So now our shift is done, we’re handing back the Tardis keys."

Jodie became the first ever female Doctor when she was given the role in 2017 and in her fourth year as the Time Lord, she will be joined by Mandip Gill, who will be reprising her role as Yaz.

Liverpudlian comedian John Bishop also signed up to play a new character called Dan.

Jodie will make her final appearance in autumn 2022 as part of the BBC’s Centenary celebrations, and this will be the Doctor's next regeneration .

Jodie's first episode, in October 2018, was watched by 11.5 million people, the largest Doctor Who audience for nearly a decade.
