Doctor Who festive special sees return of an old enemy - the Daleks

It’s nearly time for the Doctor Who festive special which can only mean one thing - Daleks.

The metal monsters will make a return on New Year’s Day in a special featuring This Way Up star Aisling Bea plus Father Ted favourite Pauline McLynn.

In Eve of the Daleks, Aisling’s character Sarah runs ELF storage and Nick (Adjani Salmon) is a customer who visits his storage unit annually on New Year’s Eve.

This year is different however when the pair join forces with the Doctor, Dan ( John Bishop ) and Yaz (Mandip Gill) to fight the Daleks.

In a trailer which aired last night, the group were seen trapped inside ELF storage - and also stuck in a terrifying time loop with the Daleks.

Their mission is to avoid extermination and escape the storage facility in time to see out New Year’s Day…

Show boss Chris Chibnall said: “We all need a little romance in our lives around New Year. Less so, Daleks.

"But Aisling Bea and Adjani Salmon’s characters will have to deal with both in a New Year’s Eve from hell.

Sarah (AISLING BEA), Yasmin Khan (MANDIP GILL), Dan (JOHN BISHOP) and The Doctor (JODIE WHITTAKER) (BBC Studios/James Pardon)

"Together with Jodie Whittaker’s Doctor, it’ll hopefully prove the perfect New Year’s Day tonic.”

The festive special is the first of three to air in 2022 as Jodie Whittaker prepares to regenerate into the 14th Doctor in the autumn.

Next year also brings the return of original showrunner Russell T Davies.
