Doctor Who fans think Derry Girls' Nicola Coughlan and Ncuti Gatwa drop major hints she's new co-star

Doctor Who fans are getting excited at the prospect of Derry Girls star Nicola Coughlan teaming up with Ncuti Gatwa for the new series.

Sex Education star Ncuti was announced as the new Time Lord on Sunday, ahead of the BAFTA TV Awards.

The Rwandan-born Scots star will become the 14th Doctor, taking over the role from Jodie Whittaker.

Whovians in the UK now believe Nicola could be his new companion after the pair posed together at the glitzy ceremony.

Ncuti, who had kept quiet about his role since February, said:"There aren’t quite the words to describe how I’m feeling. A mix of deeply honoured, beyond excited and of course a little bit scared."

Nicola and Ncuti were pictured at the BAFTAs and he shared it on his Instagram story (Ncuti Gatwa)

He then posed on the BAFTAs red carpet, and at one point even held hands with Bridgerton and Derry Girls star Nicola.

On Instagram he shared the picture and wrote: "A pair of dolls." He also posted up girl and boy emojis to represent themselves and a pair of suspicious eyes beside Nicola’s name.

Fans think the photo could be a huge hint that Nicola is his new co star.

One wrote: "That could be sooooo cool omg I love Nicola so much.

Another said: PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE. It would be AMAZING.’

Someone else said: "I will scream from the rooftops Nicola is all I need ever,’ as another added: ‘Is there a petition or something I can sign??"

Another added: "I would literally die no word of a lie."

Ncuti has sad of his new role: "This role and show means so much to so many around the world, including myself, and each one of my incredibly talented predecessors has handled that unique responsibility and privilege with the utmost care.

"I will endeavour my upmost to do the same."
