Doctor tells patient 'you're so fat you'll have to be lifted out window when you die'

A doctor apologised after telling a patient they were so fat they would 'end up housebound' and would have to be lifted out of a window when they died.

The consultant told the patient that the only surgery they would recommend was 'bariatric surgery' - like gastric bands - for the obese patient.

Details of the 'fat shaming' incident came to light after a Freedom of Information request was sent to to Maidstone and Tunbridge Wells NHS Trust, which runs Maidstone Hospital and Tunbridge Wells Hospital.

It wasn't revealed which hospital the incident took place at, but bosses at the trust confirmed the consultant had been quizzed about the comments by hospital chiefs and had offered the patient an apology.

Tam Fry, a trustee of the National Obesity Forum (UGC)

According to the FoI, the consultant told the patient: "The only surgery I would book for you is bariatric surgery or you’ll end up housebound and lifted out the window at the end."

The FoI also revealed how an anaesthetist told another patient that the extra weight they were carrying was 'as if you were carrying me on your back when you go upstairs' - and he was referred to hospital chiefs.

Another anaesthetist told a patient that they had 'shaved 15 years off their life' due to their weight - and that the patient was offered an apology.

Tam Fry, of the National Obesity Forum, said that doctors shouldn't shirk from raising obesity with patients, adding that it 'requires plain language', adding: "If they can't face the truth, so be it."
